The members of SM Entertainment K-pop girl group Aespa speak four languages in total, so it makes sense to wonder what countries the members actually hail from or what their ethnicities might be. After all, as a rule, K-pop is becoming increasingly international, and the compositions of some groups are changing to reflect that. And sure enough, the Aespa lineup is international in nature, though not necessarily as much as you might think. So to discuss country and nationality, here is the full answer to where Aespa members Karina, Winter, Giselle, and Ningning are originally from.
The Aespa Members Are Mostly from South Korea
Of the four members, three were born in South Korea, though one of those three actually grew up in Japan. Karina, the leader of the group, hails from Ji-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do in South Korea. Winter has a hometown of Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, Busan but is otherwise from Yangsan. Giselle was born in Gangnam in Seoul, specifically Garosu-gil, but she grew up in Japan and attended an international school there. Ethnically, Giselle is half Korean and half Japanese, and her birth name is Uchinaga Eri.
Finally, Ningning is from Harbin, China, a region known for its colder weather, which Ningning herself seems to have acknowledged. Ningning is the only member of Aespa who joined SM Entertainment through an audition. The other three members were scouted by SM officials. However, Karina, Winter, and even Ningning have said more than once that they mistook the SM officials for con artists at first, because they introduced themselves in a shady manner and did not say that they were from SM Entertainment!
So in summary, of the four Aespa members, Karina, Winter, and Giselle were born in South Korea, while Ningning is from Harbin, China. Giselle is ethnically half Korean and half Japanese, and she grew up in Japan.
