Punching the world full of color and energy is certainly a unique goal, whether for a K-pop group or anyone else, but that is what Woollim Entertainment girl group Rocket Punch brings to the table. The group has shifted through a variety of concepts, each figuratively or literally showing a new color, though the group is particularly fond of its “newtro” sound and aesthetic, which incorporates ’80s synth influence. Yeonhee Is the Leader of Rocket Punch

In addition to being talented and strikingly beautiful, Yeonhee is the leader of the group. There are a couple straightforward reasons why this may be the case. Firstly, Yeonhee trained the longest of any member at Woollim prior to debut, taking 946 days to debut and being referred to as the group’s “stage expert.” Secondly, she is the oldest Korean member of the group; the only older member is Juri, from Japan, who was still learning Korean in the build-up to the group’s debut.

In an interview published in July 2021, Yeonhee discussed the challenge of being the leader of Rocket Punch: “There is a way to practice the basic skills to be a vocalist, dancer, visual, but there is none for being a leader. Depending on what I do, the atmosphere and a lot of things in the team can completely change so I think I’m more careful. There are times during interviews when the maknae [Dahyun, the youngest member of the group] gives thanks on behalf of the leader; it’s on those days I feel like my worries as a leader just [go] away.”

Indeed, Yeonhee has a resilient personality in general. In an interview with Rolling Stone India published in May 2022, when asked to give advice to fans about how to persevere like she has, she explained, “I easily overcome my difficulties because I’m someone who doesn’t hold onto them for long. I love myself so much that after experiencing hardship, I find the strength to get back on my feet again. My message to Ketchy [the Rocket Punch fandom] is, be the one who loves yourself the most – that should be enough. Whenever I’m having a hard time, I take a rest and then ask myself what’s causing it. The more I do this, the more I find out about myself and then I get better every time.” And for those wondering, in that same interview, Yeonhee said that Girls’ Generation are her major role models in K-pop.
